Good Morning!
I was sitting here drinking my coffee watching my giant dog, Egon, steal toys from our other dog, Winston (Egon can be kind of jerk when he wants to be…). when I realized that I needed to clarify some issues.
The expansion of this website was originally intended for me to document my experience with IBS while following the low FODMAP eating plan (again more on this later). I started adding recipes and realized it was important that I share my food philosophy with you.
I remember when I shared with my family that I was going to be a dietitian the first two things I was asked were "are you going to judge us now?" and "are you going to only make healthy foods?"- (in other words- no fun food). I want to clear up some pre-conceived notions:
1) As a future dietitian, I LOVE food. I mean, I truly love it. I love food I'm not even allowed to eat (due to food intolerances), but I still appreciate it. I read cookbooks for fun and will always believe that raspberry buttercream is the nectar of the gods.
2) I won't judge you. If you ask me my opinion I'll share it. I respect that each person eats in their own way for their own reasons. That's ok. You respect me, I'll respect you. Sounds good?
3) I don't believe in "bad" food (however, canned meat and Velveeta freaks me out) I believe there are foods that give you better nutrition and will taste better. Ice cream isn't "bad". It's only bad if you decide to eat it everyday or in excess quantities. That goes for anything though.
4) I like real food. The least processed the better. Why? I like to know who has touched my food and what's going on with it. Plus, I'm cheap. If you can do something yourself it's almost always cheaper than someone doing it for you. A perfect example is given on my Growth page. Again, I'm not going to judge you if you buy pre-packaged food or frozen pizza (during really stressful times frozen pizza may or may not be a staple in our house…).
5) I'm not a vegetarian. You will see a lot of vegetarian recipes on this site, but it's because I'm very picky about the type of meat I eat. I want the meat I consume to be humanely treated, hormone free, and fed an appropriate diet. All this equals = $$$. I don't eat a lot of red meat, and chicken and fish are eaten on occasion. I do eat a lot of eggs and I try hard to buy cage-free.
I don't have a lot of opinions on organic food, high fructose corn syrup, or GMO's. This is because I haven't taken the time to really research them. There is great information out there and I hope to get to it one day. I do prefer to buy fruit and veggies that are in season and I prefer to buy local if my budget allows.
If you have a food philosophy I would love to read it! Please remember this a space where we RESPECT each other, not judge (unless you kick a puppy, that- I've got issues with).
Happy Reading!
